Glad midsommar! – Glad Sankt Hans! – Hyvää Juhannusta! – Happy Midsummer! 2015
Today is Midsummer Eve in Sweden and it is a rather cold midsummer with a mix of sunshine and overcast. The promised rain haven´t appeared yet.
Midsummer is the longest day of the year and is celebrated by raising maypoles dressed with leaves and flowers. Nowadays it is of course celebrated on the nearest friday in the week as the 21rd of June that is the midsummer eve is on sunday. As it is friday today tomorrow will be midsummer day and everybody will be resting after eating, drinking and dancing around the maypole singing about “Little frogs”.
The lttle frogs, little frogs are funny to see. The little frogs, little frogs are funny to see. No ears, no ears, no tails do they have. No ears, no ears, no tails do they have. Kou oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-kou oh, kou ack ack ack ack ack ack ack kaa. Kou, kou ack ack ack, kou ack ack ack ack kaa.
The midsummer day is connected to Johannes Döparen / John the Baptist and in Denmark and Norway Sankt Hans’ Day is celebrated. In Finland it is called Johannus.
Please enjoy my midsummer bouquet! One was supposed to pick seven or nine flowers during silence in the meadows and put them under the pillow, then you would dream of the one you would marry. But my flowers are all from a walk in Borås, Sweden, from the roadside or from the gardens I have passed on my walk. All pictures are photographed today.
Glad midsommar! Glad Sankt Hans! Hyvää Juhannusta! Happy Midsummer!
For those that want to have a look at the Swedish midsummer I found a few clips on Youtube: A very intricate dance at Boda by, Little frogs with Children, Midsummer at Grythyttan, Midsummer dances at Skansen, Midsummer in Boda by.
I am sharing this post with Today’s flowers and I heart Macro.
Very interesting indeed. Here in the Land of Aus most people if they are going to celebrate anything it will attending church( that’s the vast minority) and the rest will be having a bbq or worse, attending the football.
As for me, I’lll be at the annual general meeting of a federation of camera clubs. 400kms of driving, a man must be soft in the head.
