First of advent

dsc_8544Today is the first of advent, the first of the four Sundays preceding Christmas. Advent means waiting and in Sweden one traditionally has a candle holder with four candles in it. On the first Sunday one candle is lit, on the second Sunday two candles are lit until all four candles are lit on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. We don´t have children any more so I haven´t found reason to do this in later years but I do put up stars in the windows to show the neighbors that we are in time with the seasons. Well it looks bright and cosy as well from the outside when you see the stars and the electric candles in the windows too. I put up the red stars in our front windows yesterday and on Friday the receptionist at our work came with one star for every room where I work. So it is officially advent, the four week wait for Christmas. And those that like shopping can go for Skyltsöndagen as some shops still make efforts to make a show of their windows before Christmas. Skyltsöndagen was always on the first of advent that is today. My mother used to go for a walk on this Sunday in the 1960s to look at the windows. In those days the shops weren´t open on Sundays though so the shopping had to be left for Monday to Saturday.
